The Sino-Indian border in Ladakh (Asian publications series)

by Alastair Lamb

The Sino-Indian Border in Ladakh, by Professor Alastair Lamb, is researched studies of two aspects of the border's history, the main theme being the origin and validity of the line proposed to Manchu China by the British in 1899. His 'Note on a Problem of Boundary Definition in Ladakh' examines the legitimacy of the 1899 alignment, which gives China most of the disputed area, Lamb cites both cartographical and diplomatic evidence. In 'Aksai Chin and the Raskam Boundary Definition in the Karakoram, 1895-1907,' Lamb traces the evolution of the 1899 boundary, which was proposed by the British in response to the Mir of Hunza's claims to certain rights in Raskam and the Taghdumbash Pamir on the northern side of the main Karakoram watershed. Bolstering the arguments in both essays are the twenty-one maps that delineate the remote regions under discussion. Lamb also provides his solution to the Aksai Chin.
