The twentieth century has brought an explosion of ideas in all fields of knowledge, an eruption beyond the scale of any similar happening in any previous century. As one might expect, the written expression of these ideas are amazing in both their variety and their quantity; and thus, selecting the "best" of the century's written works is extremely difficult. As the editor of this book, Donald Gochberg has nevertheless attempted the "impossible" - to draw together, from many types of writing, representative and "classic" documents of the twentieth century.
