Stubbs was for too long under-valued by the label 'Mr. Stubbs the Horse Painter'. He is now recognized as deserving an equal place with his contemporaries Gainsborough and Reynolds in the foremost rank of British art. He is the most original and searching of all animal painters, whether his subject is a broodmare and foal, a monkey, or a poodle in a punt; he is also a realistic and perceptive portraitist of human beings, as much a master of the art of class distinction in eighteenth-century England as he is of the anatomy of the horse.
