The Animal Tale Treasury

by Rudyard Kipling

From Publishers Weekly From the fearful to the fearless, from the small to the large, from the fast to the slow, from the selfish to the giving, from the clever to the simple, from the beauty to the beast, animals of all sorts grace the pages of this lovely collection. Ten tales are included, accompanied by lavish watercolor illustrations, that range from naturalistic to fantastic. Modern tales and old favorites alike are included; and their lessons are readily identifiable by children. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4 The illustrations are the key to the success of this collection of animal fables and tales. They alternate between line drawings and color illustrations, including several double-page spreads. The story selections include three Aesop fables, two ``Just So'' stories, the traditional ``Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse,'' plus other classics. The selections blend well, and the styles are compatible. The large format and lovely illustrations make the book an ideal read-aloud. Spenceley adeptly captures the excitement of the jungle in ``Tigers Forever'' by Ruskin Bond, the mystical fantasy of ``The Squirrel Wife'' by Philippa Pearce, and the humor of ``The Seven Families of Lake Pipple-Popple'' by Edward Lear and ``How the Polar Bear Became'' by Ted Hughes.
