Professor Marcus Deighton has developed a technique to bring the dead back to life - a process known as rejuvenation - immediately met by hysteria within the media and a polarisation in society between the overwhelming majority who welcome it and a negligible minority who do not. One of the opponents is Deighton's daughter Helen, and another the Reverend Mouland, whose despair at the total secularisation of society is deepened when his church is sold for the storage of bodies awaiting rejuvenation.
